Emma Crawford Coffin Races & Festival
Emma Crawford came to Manitou Springs in the 1800s hoping for a cure for tuberculosis. She passed away in 1890 and was buried at the top of Red Mountain. In 1912, a railroad company began building a line to the mountain top and moved her coffin to the south slope of the mountain. Several years later, heavy rains caused Emma's remains to slide down into the canyon where she was found by two young boys. To honor her story in a lighthearted way, a parade is given followed by teams of racers--one "Emma" in a coffin and four runners—compete for a chance at winning for speediest racer, Best Entourage, Best Coffin, and a Miss Emma.
